So when he invited me to meet his extended family at an upscale steakhouse outside Chicago, I pushed aside the strange uneasiness in my chest and agreed.

The first red flag appeared the moment the hostess opened the door to a private dining room.

I stopped in the doorway.

Conversation paused just long enough for everyone to turn and look at me.

Ethan leaned closer. “Relax,” he whispered. “They’re excited to meet you.”

I smiled politely and went around shaking hands and accepting hugs from people I had never met. But his mother, Margaret Parker, studied me carefully—from my shoes to my earrings—as if she were silently calculating my worth.

She had the polished confidence of someone used to country clubs and social rankings.

Dinner started fast—and expensive.

Wine bottles appeared immediately. Appetizers kept arriving. One uncle ordered a towering seafood platter “for the table.” Someone requested wagyu steaks. Another relative asked for the chef’s tasting menu.

Each time I tried to order something modest, Margaret interrupted.

“Oh no, darling, get the filet,” she insisted sweetly. “You’re family now.”

That word—family—kept coming up.

But it didn’t feel warm.

One cousin asked about my job and laughed.

An aunt tilted her head thoughtfully.

“Sweetheart, will you be paying cash… or card?”

The room went silent.

So quiet I could hear the ice settling in someone’s glass.

At first I honestly thought it was a joke.

I turned to Ethan, waiting for him to laugh.

He gave me a tight smile instead—the one he used whenever he wanted me to cooperate without making a scene.

Margaret tilted her head.

“Card is probably easiest.”

My hand rested on my purse.

“I’m sorry,” I said slowly. “Are you asking me to pay for everyone?”

His father leaned back calmly.

“It’s something of a family tradition,” he explained. “When someone is serious about joining the family, they treat everyone to dinner.”

I let out a short laugh.

“A seven-thousand-dollar tradition?”

Ethan finally spoke—but not the way I hoped.

“Olivia,” he murmured, “just cover it for now. We’ll talk about it later.”

My chair scraped loudly against the floor as I turned toward him.

“You knew about this?”

He lowered his voice. “Don’t make this bigger than it is.”
